Works like a charm! I did not like the caliper data being mixed up with the keyboard input. But there is an easy solution. In detail (Linux): The box in the cable contains a tiny 8051-type computer which creates a USB-link (HID-interface). After setting up appropriate UDEV-rules the caliper appears as /dev/caliper0 which transmits scan codes when the DATA button is pressed. The scan codes can then be mapped to ASCII-characters.
