Did not work as sold and was soldered exactly as instructed and carefully checked before powering up (voltage rails were fine and in the correct place, the chip the right way around, etc. Given I'm an engineer and carefully discounted user error, I can only concluded that something in the kit was defective. This was probably the STC15F204EA micro, which immediately heated up and cooked on powering - possibly because it wasn't programmed, or defective (again, I checked against the datasheet and orientation and power/ground were correct). Can't even buy a pre-programmed clock chip to replace the defective one. Wouldn't recommend this kit.
