Works well. Don't connect to 5V - these modules are really designed for 4V, e.g. directly powered by lithium battery. Also, I found that adding a 1000uF capacitor across Vcc and Gnd was essential to stop the board from restarting every time it locked onto the network. If your board alternates between fast and slow flash, and keeps printing out 'SMS Ready' on the serial interface - try adding a big capacitor. I used the patch antenna in preference to the coil.
