Very sturdy. The diameter of the pole/column is 3.5cm (35mm) I verified with a caliber. The clamp attaches to the desk and with a hex screw it attaches to the first (or bottom) section of the column. and the second section of the column screws on the the bottom one. The arms can attach wherever you want on the column. there are 2 small hex screws where the arm meets the column and you just tighten it on the position that you want so it acts as a clamp on the column to keep it in place (can't go up/down/rotate)
