I ordered a cotton 1cm thick isolation plate. I get a .5cm synthetic plate.

This is not Heat Insulation, this is Heat Reflector. So you want to use it if you want to protect something from heat, because the adhesive is on the foam side, not on the alluminium foil side. Anyway that is pice of crap, the sponge/foam is peeling.
